Tippy-Toe Chick, Go!

Happy Wednesday, Folks!

Here are a few reading activities I have planned for the upcoming week.

 My district uses the Reading Street series, so we're going to be all about this story...

While I'm busy conducting 3 small groups, 

(19 children total)

my other kids busy themselves with centers.

They'll visit 5 (out of 6)

over the course of the week.

Next week's activities will look something like this...

We'll cover commands and the consonant + le pattern to round out the week.  

Those activities are included, too!

Here's a tic-tac-toe game that reinforces the high-frequency words from the story. 

You can access it HERE!

(To play, you'll provide your kids with dri-erase markers.  Each kid selects a word.

They'll play the game the traditional way with the exception they'll be writing their word, rather than an "x" or an "o".

A "Counting On" Apple Scoot Game

Hi Y'all!

Procrastination is the name of the game, 

my friends... and it seems 

I'm the local champion.

Tomorrow is Sunday

 and one would think 

my lesson plans 

would have been completed 

at this point in the week.

Sadly, they are not.

That task will be 

my number one priority 

immediately after church tomorrow...

unless I find another reason 

to avoid it and

I'm thinking that's highly likely.

and it's a behavioral management system 

with which most littles can identify.

Sadly, I know I can!

This product is kinda-sorta

 like the clip charts

with one difference.

Instead of each kiddo moving a clip

 from one color card to the next,

the kiddo manipulates a colored car in response to his/her choices.

You'll need a sheet of poster board and a library pocket for each student.

Secondly...

my district adopted 

the Reading Street series(2008) 

a few years ago.

The following product was developed over the course of the first year out of a need to practice the high-frequency words introduced

with each story.

It features a card game to reinforce the high frequency words 

for every story 

for the ENTIRE year.

Honestly, my own kiddos play it daily 

(year after year) 

and they never seem to tire of it.  

This product also includes a vocabulary card for every high frequency word. 

Here you'll see the high frequency words for

It's Teacher Appreciation Week!

Today marks the first day of

Teacher Appreciation Week!

Were you recognized in any 

special way at your school?

The teachers at my school were treated to hand-delivered doughnuts  

(on a cart, actually)

to our classrooms.

I chose a chocolate glazed doughnut

(like... who wouldn't?)

and I enjoyed every teensy-tiny crumb

since my kiddos were at specials and

I didn't have to feel guilty about

inhaling a doughnut in front of them.

Some delicacies are so rare.

In other news...

our annual 
Art Under the Stars

was held a week or so ago.

While it takes a lot of preparation, the results are beautiful.

 This was a directed-drawing project I tried for the first time this year.
It's kind of growing on me...

A Freebie, A Funny, and New Products

Hello Friends,

Sometime around October 6th, 

(the date of my last post), 

I seem to have fallen into a swirling vortex of Halloween, 

Red Ribbon Week,

laundry,

fundraising at the BEAST level, 

teaching, and

life in general.

Did I mention laundry?

Can you relate. at. all?

If any case, I do have a few things to share with you today.

If you've got the time, 

I'll start with a funny or two.

Just recently

in my classroom,

I overheard one first grader 

explain to another...

"Japanese and Chinese people are the same.

They ALL speak Spanish." 

Or what about my incredibly impulsive friend who walked into her speech teacher's classroom where she squealed with delight at  the picture of an ocean animal she recognized on the table.

Little friend began to s.h.o.u.t.

"I know what THAT is!  

It lives in the ocean!

I KNOW what that animal is!

It's a coctupus!"

I'm sorry to inform you 

speech class will be delayed today. 

Mrs. Speech Teacher 

had to step out for a moment.

Next up is an unusual freebie for you.

I developed this checklist for a young friend in my classroom who needed more frequent

feedback than the traditional clip chart I use for behavior management.

You'll need to draw in your own happy, straight, and sad faces in the circles before you copy it.

I admit I was a tad bit distracted by the laundry and this was one of those things that just didn't get done.

Last week, I read this delightful story to my little friends.

but basically...

 Turkey is in trouble.

He is scheduled to be consumed for Thanksgiving dinner unless he can

disguise himself.

First graders were then given a copy of a turkey to disguise for themselves.

The results are always wonderful surprises!

Reading Street Stuff

I'm feeling slightly anxious as I debut my newest collection of activities for Reading Street.  Why, you ask?

Simply because this one is for second grade.

New territory for me.

 These activities supplement the story by the same name in the Reading Street series (Unit 1.2).  It features a long vowel sort, fill-in-the-blank, a spelling scrabble, ABC order (to the first letter), subject of the sentence, a small group card game to reinforce the high frequency words, a spelling rebus activity, a variety of roll, read, and write PLUS other fun games that aren't pictured here.

I tell ya, it's more than you'll need for an entire week!

Fact and Fiction Fun

Pinterest is an absolute addiction.   

It has a tendency to consume time I should be using to do laundry and prepare healthy dinners for my family.  

Sadly, though... it doesn't always happen that way but I'm told tomorrow will be better.

Recently, I made excellent use of my time when I pinned this project I found on 

Mrs. Wolf's First Grade Fun.   

I needed to teach the same concept but with a bee theme since my firsties are currently working on the Honey Bees story (Reading Street series).  

 

After we created our anchor chart, I asked my young friends to write the differences between the two.  Basically, this was a "just jot down what you remember" kind of assignment.

 

You can tell the author of this project was listening with BOTH ears.  

Under fact, she has written...

real, camera, (meaning the illustrations are made with a camera)

animals are not talking, to teach us something new

and

under fiction she has recorded...

make-believe, (illustrations are) drawn and colored,

animals talking

animals different colors

(we read) for fun.

 

By George, I think she's got it!

 

As for the art project, this bee is sporting a pink bow because she is a worker bee

 (and they're all female!).
